Lynn Rival was built by Rival Yachts Ltd/Southern Boatbuilding Co Ltd and fitted out in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, by her first owner. Her hull was moulded in 1979 and she was launched in 1981. She is one of 63 Rival 38s built to the design of Peter Brett.
Her first owner sailed her from the east coast of England to the Mediterranean where, based in Greece, she enjoyed holiday cruises until 2007. She was hauled and stored on the hard for over six months per year throughout this period.
We sailed her, with her first owner, from 1988, became part owners in 1991, and full owners in 1995. In 2005-2007 we prepared her for long distance cruising and in 2007 she became our 'live-aboard' home.
After a passage down the Red Sea she cruised the western Indian Ocean until, in October 2009, she was attacked by pirates within the waters of the Seychelles. We were forced to abandon her and within 24 hours she was rescued by the Royal Navy, to be returned to the UK as deck cargo, and stored ashore to await our return.
Despite looking rather forlorn her hull and deck suffered only cosmetic damage and we treated her to a full restoration, relaunching her in August 2012. Her hull was Coppercoated and topsides professionally painted with Awlgrip to a very high standard. The refit included new standing and running rigging and guardwires, new sails and canvas work, new teak decks, toerails and grab rails, full engine overhaul, replacement of batteries and major electrical wiring and repair/overhaul of all retained equipment. The interior refurbishment included new headlining and upholstery, varnishwork throughout, and complete galley and heads rebuild. Much of the work is described in a series of PBO (Practical Boat Owner) articles between October 2011 and May 2012.
Between September 2012 and July 2017 she has taken us on a 19,000 mile Atlantic cruise, from Dartmouth in south-west England via Portugal, Morocco, the Canaries and Cape Verdes, Brazil, Uruguay, French Guiana, many Caribbean islands and the Azores to Lisbon. She has been hauled and is now stored on the hard at Tagus Yacht Center.
Lynn Rival has been well maintained and loved by her 'two careful owners from new'. She is ready to take a new skipper anywhere in the world.
